Estate Planning Does Not Have to be Overwhelming

June 11, 2026
Andrew Freeze

One of the most common reasons people put off estate planning is simple: they assume it will be difficult.

They imagine a long, uncomfortable process. They worry they will need to know exactly what documents they need before they ever meet with an attorney. They may feel embarrassed that they have waited too long or possibly that they don’t know where to begin because these things are complicated.

The truth is that estate planning is often much smoother than people expect.

At our office, one of our goals is to make the process as clear and manageable as possible from the very beginning. That starts with gathering helpful information up front. When clients complete an intake form before the consultation, we are often able to identify the key issues quickly, focus the conversation, and avoid spending unnecessary time on things that do not apply to their situation.

For many people, the initial questions are straightforward:

  • Who should receive your property when you pass away?
  • Who should make financial decisions for you if you cannot make them yourself?
  • Who should make medical decisions for you if you are unable to communicate?
  • Who should be in charge of carrying out your wishes?

Those are important decisions, but they do not always require a complicated process. Sometimes the most valuable part of the meeting is simply having someone walk you through those decisions in plain English, explain your options, and help you understand what makes the most sense for your family.

That does not mean every estate plan is simple. Some families need more detailed planning, especially when minor children, blended families, real estate, business interests, special needs planning, creditor concerns, or probate avoidance are involved. But even then, the goal is the same: to take something that feels overwhelming and break it into understandable steps.

A good estate planning process should not leave you feeling confused or pressured. It should leave you feeling informed, organized, and relieved that you finally have a plan in place.

If you have been putting off estate planning because you think it will be too hard, too time-consuming, or too uncomfortable, you may find that the hardest part is simply getting started.

If you have been waiting for the “right time” to get your estate plan in place, this may be your sign to take the first step. Contact our office today to schedule an estate planning consultation, and we will help you move through the process one step at a time.
